Description
The 4-4-0 is a locomotive type with a classification that uses Whyte notation for classifying steam locomotives by wheel arrangement. It represents the following layout: four steering wheels on two axles (usually in a leading bogie), four driving and coupled wheels on two axles, and no trailing wheels. Due to the large number of these types produced and used in the United States, the 4-4-0 is more commonly known as the American type, but the type later became popular in the United Kingdom, where a large number were produced.
