B. philenor is found in Central and North America. The upper surface of the hind wings is iridescent blue or green blue with pale arrowhead marks. The underside of the hind wing has seven orange sub-marginal spots surrounded by iridescent blue. Both sides of the forewings are black or dull blackish brown. The Pipevine machaon can have a wingspan of up to 3.5 inches (89 mm).
