Welcome to Middle-earth and its strategic board game War of the Ring. Players take part in the struggle between the armies of the Free Peoples and the heroic Companions of the Fellowship of the Ring against the dark hordes of the Shadow and the powerful Servants of the Dark Lord.
In a game of War of the Ring, the player controlling the Shadow attempts to conquer Middle-earth by using their military superiority. They gather, under their command, the legions of Orcs and Trolls of Sauron, the forces of the wizard Saruman, and the hordes of Southrons and Easterlings, to cover the West in darkness. Faced with this offensive, the Free Peoples player leads an alliance of Elves, Dwarves, Riders of Rohan, Men of Gondor, and Men of the North: a fragile union attempting to defend the last free realms of Middle-earth and buy precious time to allow the success of the Ring-bearers' Quest.
As armies clash, the nine Companions of the Fellowship of the Ring journey to the heart of the Dark Lord's domains - Mount Doom - to destroy the One Ring in the Fire Mountain. Controlled by the Free Peoples player, the Fellowship is their true chance of victory, as the military forces of the Shadow will be defeated along with their master if the Ring is destroyed. But the Quest faces increasing dangers as Darkness spreads over Middle-earth... In the end, only one side will be victorious.
