El Grande is set in 15th-century Spain, at the end of the Reconquista. Players send their caballeros to take control of the 9 regions and become "El Grande." However, everything depends on the king's location – and majorities can change in a blink of an eye.
Players take turns in order based on the power card they play. Each turn, players choose one of five action cards, which allows them to place caballeros on the map and perform a special action. After 3 rounds, they score points based on majorities in the different regions – and extra points for the majority in the current "kingdom" and in their home region. After a total of 9 rounds, someone will be the new ruler of medieval Spain.
