The Golden Gate is an Art Deco style suspension bridge that spans the San Francisco Bay and is one of the city's most enduring symbols. Its construction grew out of the need to get from San Francisco to Marin County, California, as ferry traffic in San Francisco Bay had become too heavy. Construction of the Golden Gate Bridge began in 1933 and was completed in 1937.
