In Gold West, players take on the roles of prospectors building their mining empires while vying for the precious metals of the frontier. In a delicate balance between resource management and area control, players must plan their building strategies while carefully managing their supply lines in order to refine the right resources at the most opportune times. Stay ahead of the competition, and you just might lead the West into a golden age.
The goal of Gold West is to accumulate the greatest amount of victory points through clever management of your expanding mining empire. The game features five resources: the metals Copper, Silver, and Gold are used to acquire victory points in various ways, while Wood and Stone are building materials used to construct camps and settlements on the board to collect more resources and influence the landscape.
Each hexagon contains two or three resources. Gold generally earns players the most points, with Silver and Copper earning slightly less. In addition, each terrain type earns points for the player with the most influence at the end of the game. Copper terrains are the most valuable, while Silver, Gold, and Forest terrains earn slightly fewer points.
When obtaining new metals and materials, players place them on their "supply track", a mancala-style track on which they manage their resources. The further down the track you place them, the more points you gain, as this creates a more refined product, but it will take longer to bring these resources to the start of the supply track, where they can be used. Shipments, investments, and Boomtown offices often reward players who fill them sooner, so it's a careful balance between risk and reward.
