In Zogen, players, who are researchers, try to get rid of their microorganism cards as quickly as possible. To do this, they must observe the laboratory environment and spot the slightest change, then "report" it by playing their card.
More specifically, each player starts with sixteen cards, each representing 0 to 4 types of microorganisms: "Maru", "Tsuki", "Yama", and "Siri". The first player places a card face up on the table, then all players play simultaneously, trying to play a card that differs from the initial card by only one microorganism (one more or one less).
Thus, if a card represents "Maru" and "Tsuki", a player can play a card representing either "Maru" or "Tsuki", or a card representing "Maru", "Tsuki" and one of the missing microorganisms. You must announce the name of the microorganism added or removed when you play a card, and then all other players must reproduce the card you just played.
When a player has only three cards left in hand, the round ends, and players score points based on the number of cards they hold. The player with the most points after the agreed number of rounds wins the round.
